"8 hundred and 11 million dollars… 8 hundred and 11 million dollars!
April is Violence Prevention Month. These were the headlines this April:
Without DOJ Funding, Community Violence Intervention Programs Face Uncertainty
On April 23, The Washington Post reported that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had canceled hundreds of grants to community organizations. As the article noted, many of the canceled grants were for gun violence prevention, addiction prevention, and victim advocacy. An exclusive Reuters report found that the total value of the DOJ cuts was $811 million.
When I saw that, at first, I was really upset. Then I remembered who we are as a city. As I said at the Mother’s Day Walk for Peace Community Briefing, we just have to Do It Ourselves. If everybody in this park today gets 10 friends to donate $25, then “We gon’ be alright.” 8 hundred and 11 million dollars!
Survivors. Those of us who have lost someone that we love to violence. This is our year. This is the year that WE are going to help the Peace Institute to go past their goal. They were there for us at our very darkest hour. Each of us is going to raise $250 between now and Father’s Day by putting a post on social media asking people to make a donation at mothersdaywalk4peace.org. I’ve lost 4 members of my family to murder in Massachusetts. I’ve raised $2,500 for Team Mass General Brigham using that tool.

Gentlemen, please take 3 steps forward. I need to talk to you about something. Some of you may know that besides me being the Peace Commissioner, I have also been Mother Hip Hop for 30 years. Anyone who knows me, knows that I’ve been working with men and boys and saving their lives throughout those 30 years. You got next!
This year, I’m helping the Peace Institute to include the dads and men who have lost someone. For the Mother’s Day part of the Walk, we raised over $400 thousand dollars. I would love for us to raise another $400K so that we have $811 thousand in in our Peace Bank because we lost $811 million in violence prevention across the country. I’m Captain of Alternatives to Violence Network Team. We’re almost at our goal of $8,111 thousand dollars. Ask me for our team page or scan the Peace Institutes’ Walk QR codes along the way.
